Recently published world’s best universities ranking shows no Bangladeshi universities have been able to position among the 500 best universities. Doesn’t this news make us be worried? University is the place of pilgrimage for higher education. Along with providing quality education and degree, university is to discover and organize new knowledge through research work, produce newer and newer theory. These are the significant criteria to be enlisted as a best university.
What is the plight of our higher education and our universities? Our universities are busy with providing multifarious and colourful degrees. Their efforts are confined to fitting their products (students) for the job market. We are experiencing poor research work, in some cases no research work. Our universities are far-away from using latest and ultra modern technology let alone gigantic contribution to science and technology. Why are our universities out of the list if these are not true? I have some known persons who got their bachelor and masters degree without having the core book of the studied subject. They passed their bachelor or masters exam by collecting senior brothers’ READYMADE NOTE. From this kind of university student what kind of research work or newer theory we can expect. This is not the fault of that student but the fault of the university. Our universities can neither facilitate needed facilities for conducting research work nor encourage them to do so. Bureaucratic problems and poor technological facilities are eating into the quality of our higher education and slowing down our advancement while the rest of the world is running keeping pace with the speedy current of advancement.
