Liberation: Our expectation and achievement

To get rid of great oppression of the then Pakistani ruler, our valiant sons fought for nine months long and snatched our long cherished freedom in 1971. At that time, we dreamt of a self-dependent and developed country where there would be no fear of suppression and poverty. Political harmony would exist in the country. Economic, societal, cultural, and educational development would lead the country towards enrichment. If all these phenomena existed, we could claim our freedom. We had dreamt rightly but all of our dreams went under water. Our independence is in black and white only not in reality. We got a free land only, nothing more than that of. We are yet to flavour the real taste of our independence. The country will be truly free when we experience the economic emancipation, self-dependency, social harmony, political stability, cultural independence and education for all. In a word, as like as what we dreamt in 1971.

What is our present scenario? Poverty is eating into our downtrodden community. Human rights are trampling on now and then. We have not been capable of ensuring education for all yet. Political instability has created a bar to our economic and social development. Political mean interest has made our country crippled and dependent on the donor countries. Unsteady law and order situation has helped terrorism raise its head. Bad governance in every sector has resulted in ultimate dissatisfaction of the common people.

Our politicians became so self-centered that they did everything for themselves and nothing for the commoner. Degradation of their patriotism and sense of morality resulted in the unprecedented corruption. Consequently, all of our dreams have shattered, which we cannot join in any way. One thing we can do; we are to dream newly and work sincerely to materialize those dreams. We are to cultivate the sense true patriotism and sense of morality; we are to sacrifice our self-interest for the greater interest of the commoner. We are to develop ourselves in every sense and the aggregate of this individual development will bring overall development of the country.

In spite of having negativity, we cannot ignore our poor achievement. Last year our compatriot Dr. Muhammad Yunus achieved world’s most prestigious prize, the Novel Peace Prize. We cannot also belittle our achievement in sports. We have made our country polio free. Now literacy rate is higher than that of past. Besides, we see our flourishing garment and telecommunication sector. Other industries are also developing gradually. Notwithstanding that, we are far behind from our dreamt dreams. When we put our expectation and achievement in a balance, we see that the side of expectation is weightier and when we put our positive achievement and negative achievement in another balance, we see that the side of positive achievement is lighter.

To me, we should not look back to our hard times. Nevertheless, from our hard times we should and must take lesson for the days to come. We should take the diamond and throw away the debris from the past time line.

It is high time to join our hands to fight for the real freedom not for the so-called free land. Someday will do come when country will experience the real taste of freedom and we are all waiting for that day. Good luck Bangladesh!
